Following the sell-out success of The Caravaggio Experience, Udjenza proudly presents another Valletta Resounds production: Sailors in the City Experience. Set in the heart of wartime Malta, the show transports you to a time when music and stories lured sailors into Valletta’s most infamous street.

It’s Victory in Europe Day. The Second World War has just ended, and The Gut is alive with music, mischief and celebration. Amidst the clinking glasses and jubilant street-side cheers, Vicietta, a singer and barmaid, and her brother Duminku, a sailor bursting with stories from the front, welcome you to the heart of Valletta’s spirited past.

Together they revive forgotten characters and hidden tales of the street, weaving them through wartime classics like We’ll Meet Again, Roll Out The Barrel and Lili Marlene, brought to life by Gennaro, the bar’s accordionist.

Performed by exceptional local talent in the intimate setting of Sailors’ Paradise, this isn’t just a show. It’s an experience staged within a living museum. Original artefacts line the walls, each one echoing the untamed spirit of Malta’s past.

Grab a Blue Label on the house and step back into the gritty glamour of Malta’s most legendary strip.

Please note: the venue is not wheelchair accessible, as access is only possible via stairs.

The venue

Sailors' Paradise

99 Strait Street, Valletta VLT 1460

Entry from Strait Street. Access is via stairs only.

Not wheelchair accessible. Access is only possible via stairs.

Strait Street, The Gut, was for a century and a half the place where the Mediterranean fleet came ashore. A narrow lane of music halls, bars and dance clubs running the length of Valletta, it was where sailors from every navy that put into the Grand Harbour spent their pay and their shore leave. By the time the British fleet withdrew in 1979 the street had fallen quiet, and it stayed that way for decades.

Sailors’ Paradise is one of the rooms that survived. It is a working bar and, genuinely, a small museum: original artefacts line every wall, each with its own history in the street outside. Chesterfields, enamel advertising signs, wartime photographs, an anchor.

It is an unusually intimate place to stage a show. There is no stage. The performers work among the tables, close enough to touch, in the room where the stories they are telling actually happened.

Before you book

Good to know

Worth two minutes before you book. A couple of these decide whether you get in on the night.

  • Due to the immersive format of the performance, entry after the scheduled start time is not permitted. Guests arriving late will not be admitted and will not be entitled to a refund or exchange.
  • The complimentary Blue Label beer forms part of the production and cannot be exchanged for an alternative drink or redeemed for cash.
  • In accordance with the law, visitors aged under 17 are not permitted to purchase or sample alcoholic drinks.
  • The venue is not wheelchair accessible. Access is only possible via stairs.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes, and it differs by show. The Caravaggio Experience is 12+. Sailors in the City Experience is 18+. It takes place in a licensed bar and includes a complimentary beer. In accordance with Maltese law, visitors under 17 may not purchase or sample alcoholic drinks.
Are the venues wheelchair accessible?
St John's Co-Cathedral is accessible, and the Oratory can be reached without stairs. Sailors' Paradise is not. Access is only possible via stairs, and there is no lift. We're sorry for the limitation; the building is a historic Strait Street bar and cannot be altered. If access is a concern for either show, call us on 7920 3774 before booking and we'll talk it through.
What happens if I arrive late?
For Sailors in the City Experience, entry after the scheduled start is not permitted. The performance is immersive and staged among the audience, so there is no way in once it begins. Late arrivals cannot be admitted and are not entitled to a refund or exchange. Please arrive in good time. For The Caravaggio Experience, the Oratory opens at 18:00 for an 18:30 start.
What language is the performance in?
Both shows are performed in English, and the Cathedral tour is in English too. Printed programme notes for The Caravaggio Experience are also available at the venue in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish.
How do I find the venue?
The Caravaggio Experience: entry is via the main door of St John's Co-Cathedral on St John Street. Not the Cathedral's daytime visitor entrance. Sailors in the City Experience: 99 Strait Street, look for the Sailors' Paradise sign above the arched doorway. Valletta is pedestrianised; the nearest parking is the MCP car park or Floriana, both about a ten-minute walk.
Is seating allocated?
The Caravaggio Experience: the €28 Performance ticket is free seating, so arriving when the Oratory opens at 18:00 gets you the choice of the room. The €56 Cathedral Tour ticket includes reserved seating for tour guests. Sailors in the City Experience: seating is unallocated and the room is small.
Is the drink really included?
Yes. A complimentary Blue Label is part of the Sailors in the City Experience ticket, not an extra. It forms part of the production, so it can't be swapped for a different drink or redeemed for cash, but you're very welcome to buy another at the bar.
